Whangarei Personal Traininer: Kelena Roughan

Kelena’s love for movement and fitness started early with physical activities a key focus throughout school. Later on, she found herself constantly going to the gym between her busy work schedules. Through movement training, she realised that making fitness her career was what she wanted to do and has since focused her goals toward health and fitness.

Kelena got a certificate in advanced, personal training through Fit Futures.  Working her way through additional courses, including nutrition, and a Yoga course, Kelena is all about building her knowledge-base and delivering exceptional training as a fitness expert.

“I enjoy exploring the mobility side of things, and then incorporating strength and cardio into that, rather than just strength itself. Every persons body is different, but I believe the body works best when it can move through range. Building strength and fitness alongside range of movement is what I try to do for my clients”

Kelena enjoys training people of different age, creating a comfortable and encouraging space for them to explore their goals.

“Key things like lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, stress, work. All those factors contribute to your fitness level when you go for a personal training session. I discuss with my clients where they think they are at the moment and what we could change for them in order to see results whether it be mental, emotional or physical. It’s something we do in the beginning together, to set those clear goals so that we can have something to measure.”

The willingness to learn, I am continually learning – and love it! I want to help people feel successful and reach their goals – whatever they may be within the personal training class.

It’s about training people and educating people how our bodies move. Over my time at Studio 51 I have grown more than I ever thought I would. My understanding of movement in the body now means so much more to me than it did when I started my own training. A clients fitness goal is not just a fitness goal. We focus on fitness, nutrition, mental health, lifestyle, sleep and so much more.
I really get along with anyone old or young. I want people to feel comfortable in our fitness and gym space here at Studio 51.

Whether you go with a buddy class, group, or group training class I cover a range of skills – mobility – activation – strength – different types of cardio training. I love to cover as much as I can in a session with a client to achieve the best results, with the intent to improve my clients lifestyle and wellbeing. This way I know my clients can walk away having learnt something from our session.
From the outset I discuss with my client’s what success means to them. If after 3 months a client isn’t seeing results we will have discussed it long before three months has passed.

Whilst it doesn’t need to be formal (unless the client wants it) from the outset we (my clients and I) work to understand a ‘base level’ this is important to ensure we don’t push the body too far.

What often happens is clients quite honestly forget how far they have come in just three months. All of sudden living without pain is the norm! Or, all of a sudden they can touch their toes, or do a push up, or move without so much restriction in their hips!
Depending on the individual’s fitness levels and goals, people always fit into a class. However if someone is concerned I’d recommend they do even a few personal training sessions (or buddy sessions) with me, so that we can build on their confidence.

However, equally I’d say – come to a class – and I can always make alternative exercises for those who want something specific, or are not comfortable. But don’t panic this is done without calling out attention on someone. I’d always tell them they will enjoy their time at the Studio, our community is so welcoming. I have clients that love a great chat, and would make you feel welcome. I also have clients that are in-and-out due to kids or other commitments, although during class everyone works together to help each other have a great session.
For young adults and teens, it’s about a bit of banter, testing their limits and pushing them to reach their goals. It’s about creating challenges. This age group never says no to a challenge! It’s amazing seeing the support and encouragement they offer each other in class. I tailor to their goals and what they enjoy the most. Facial expressions (or honesty) usually give it away, I know when they aren’t enjoying something..!

For my kiddies, I make it fun for them, but I also teach them how to use their body. I teach them how to move, how to engage their muscles. I teach them how to have fun with movement, which is my goal for them. Teaching the younger generation how to move so they have the confidence as they grow up and can live their little lives to the fullest

I went to see Nicci on my wife’s recommendation after developing extreme lumbar muscular pain.
As a 38 year old male, this is not something I would normally have made time for, but the results were remarkable.

Within 3 days I was completely pain free. I found Nicci very professional, first localising my pain and then taking me through some targeted stretching.

I strongly recommend seeing Nicci and taking her advice.
